Esd materials are classified by how quickly electricity moves through the material with that speed referred to as the resistance of the material. The charges flow to ground more slowly and in a somewhat more controlled manner than with conductive materials. Abs esd7 is an abs thermoplastic with static dissipative properties for applications where a static charge can damage products impair their performance or cause an explosion in a flammable environment. This kind of charging is the buildup of an electric charge by the rubbing or contact with another material. Dissipative items have a surface resistance of more than 1 x 10 5 ohms square but less than 1 x10 11 ohms square. However thermoplastics such as peek and acetal can be modified to provide a range of electrically conductive anti static or static dissipative properties. Dissipative materials have a surface resistivity equal to or greater than 1 x 10 5 ω sq but less than 1 x 10 12 ω sq or a volume resistivity equal to or greater than 1 x 10 4 ω cm but less than 1 x 10 11 ω cm 2. Materials in automated manufacturing which will touch on conductive areas of esd sensitive electronic should be made of dissipative material and the dissipative material must be grounded.
